These are the years when things change. Not dramatically, but noticeably. A Grade III student at K.R. Mangalam World School, Indirapuram, Ghaziabad is not the same child who walked into Nursery. They can read now. They have opinions. They argue back. And they have started asking questions that are genuinely hard to answer, which is exactly what you want.
Play still has a place, but it shares the day with proper subject work. Science is not just a storybook anymore. Maths is not just counting games. Writing goes beyond single sentences. The jump is real, and some kids take to it immediately while others need a few months to settle in. Both responses are fine. We plan for both.
There is a line in the NEP 2020 about students “constructing” knowledge rather than absorbing it. Sounds theoretical, but in practice it is pretty simple. Do not just tell a nine-year-old about plants. Take them to the garden and let them plant something. Do not just teach fractions on the board. Give them something to measure and divide.
At our Indirapuram, Ghaziabad campus, that is how Grades III to V work. Labs, the Edible Garden, field trips to local sites and museums, projects that stretch across a week or two. A project on food might end up involving biology, geography, basic maths, and a poster they had to present in front of the class. Nobody told them they were doing four subjects at once. They just thought the project was interesting.
This is a thing most school brochures claim, but few actually follow through on. At this campus, co-curricular activities are scheduled into the timetable for Grades III to V. They are not extras you sign up for after school. Every student goes through music, art, dance, PE, and library sessions as part of their week.
Why? Because a kid who discovers they love basketball at age 8 carries that for life. A kid who never gets the chance does not even know what they missed. Same goes for music, painting, public speaking, all of it. These years are when interests form. You cannot build interests if you never get exposed to the options.
By the time students finish Grade V here, the goal is pretty clear. They should be comfortable reading and writing across subjects, able to work in a group without the teacher managing every step, willing to ask questions when they do not understand, and aware that doing badly at something is not the end of the world. That last one matters more than people think. Grade VI gets harder. If the foundation from III to V is shaky, everything after it becomes a struggle.
