This is where it all starts. The Foundational Stage at K.R. Mangalam World School, Indirapuram, Ghaziabad covers Pre-Nursery through Grade II, roughly ages 2.5 to 7. And at this age, how a child feels about school matters more than what they score on a worksheet; if a child associates learning with stress at age four, undoing that later is incredibly difficult.
So the entire approach here is play-based and inquiry-led. Children learn through doing, touching, building, singing, moving, not through sitting at a desk and filling in blanks. That does not mean there is no structure. There is plenty. But it is built around how young children actually learn, not how adults think they should.
A typical day has a rhythm to it: circle time, free play, guided activities, outdoor time, stories, music, snack breaks. The rhythm stays consistent so children feel safe, but no two days are the same. If a group of kids spends an entire morning building a block tower and negotiating who gets which piece, that is spatial thinking, teamwork, and patience happening naturally. Nobody needs to interrupt it to hand out a worksheet.
Structured inputs happen too. Phonics, letter and number recognition, pre-writing skills, early maths concepts. But they are introduced through songs, stories, games, and hands-on materials. We draw from multiple pedagogies, elements of the Early Years Programme, Montessori methods, and Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences framework. The approach is blended, not boxed into one system.
Class sizes at the Foundational Stage are kept smaller than the rest of the school. The point is simple: a teacher who has 15 children can notice things. Which child seems anxious at drop-off. Which one has not spoken all day. Which one suddenly cannot sit still. These are signals, and they only get picked up when the adult in the room has enough capacity actually to look.
Each child’s development across five domains- physical, language, cognitive, social, and emotional- is observed and tracked. Teachers share this with parents regularly, not as test results but as honest observations about how the child is growing.
Even at this stage, our Indirapuram, Ghaziabad campus has specialist teachers for Music, PE, Dance, Art, and Library. The class teacher handles the core day, but specialists run their own sessions. A three-year-old who meets a real musician or a trained movement teacher every week is getting an experience that shapes their interests early.
Children in the Foundational Stage have access to their own play area and supervised visits to the school’s Skill Studios. There is also a sensory exploration space for the youngest learners: textures, sand, water play, all carefully set up.
